Silver Fox Jiu Jitsu - Overcoming Obstacles
Silver Fox Jiu Jitsu is a new dojo in Wahiawa, HI – opened in just the past year – that has been dealing with the struggles of starting a business during COVID-19! At Dollamur, we love to hear success stories of these small businesses that are also currently using Dollamur products! We’re glad we were able to get in touch with Garry Nakamura, the Owner of Silver Fox Jiu Jitsu, to ask a few questions about their Dojo, Dollamur mats and what a crazy year it has been.
First we needed a little bit of background -
“Silver Fox Jujitsu was my idea. You know, I was just really inspired by my coach, Mike Fowler. Along with his blessing, I decided to open up my own gym. We currently offer three different programs - The kids program is designed to give the kids a safe and fun start to learning jiu jitsu and really help the kids make jujitsu a part of their everyday lives. Our adult program is split into two separate groups - one focuses on the fundamentals of jiujitsu and the other is an advanced class.”

Our gym is located right across from Schofield Barracks, so most of our members are in the military. We just strive to incorporate jujitsu into people's lifestyles. We want to be known as the gym that has really great jiujitsu practices and instruction - But we still love to sit around and be able to joke and laugh at each other and have fun.
Dollamur in the Silver Fox Dojo
I have the Dollamur FLEXI-Connect Grey Mats for our gym. They're the only Dollamur product that I've used so far and they're the only matte vendor I've ever used!
Working with Dollamur was great! I told him about my gym, I gave them some dimensions and they came out with the amount of mat I would need. It was spot on. And I had a really good experience.
Silver Fox and COVID-19
COVID was really tough on us. The local Government of Hawaii forced us to shut down and we’ve since been following their guidelines for reopening in phases. We're really just happy that we finally are back to rolling!
What the Future holds for Silver Fox JJ
Our goal this year is to double in size! We've only been open for one year, so we might be able to do that this year. We just want to be a place that continues to promote physical health, mental well-being and making jujitsu a part of your lifestyle.
