Into Perspective with Spectrum Jiu Jitsu
Spectrum Jiu Jitsu is another location that Dollamur has been proud to work with and supply mats to! After a difficult year, we were able to chat with their team to see how they’re getting along now and we were glad to hear things are running well!
All about Spectrum JJ
Spectrum Jiu Jitsu is located in Kearneysville, West Virginia in what is known as the eastern panhandle right on the border of Virginia and Maryland. The academy was started in 2015 by Raymond and Seth Miller, two elementary education teachers and long time martial artists. Spectrum was one of the first BJJ academies in the area. We are affiliated under Team Renzo Gracie through Professor Brian Marvin of Renzo Gracie Houston.
At Spectrum Jiu Jitsu we offer youth and adult classes. We also have a successful competition team. Our youth classes are divided into age groups: 3-4, 5-7, 8-10, and 11-13. We also have three different adult classes: 101, 201, and All Levels. Our focus is on making our students as good at BJJ as possible while maintaining a friendly atmosphere and excellent training environment.
The Spectrum Team
Coach Ray and Coach Seth are the head instructors for the youth program and the adult BJJ 101 program. Professor Josh Halverson, Renzo Gracie black belt, is the head instructor of our adult program and Coach Gene is the head of our adult competition team!
Our academy's motto is "you win or you learn". We feel this encourages a positive training mindset which is vital in a sport as rigorous as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! The term "spectrum" is used as our name because it is our goal to provide instruction for individuals no matter where they may fall on the spectrum. From hobbyists to hard core competitors, we provide a home for anyone!
Dollamur at Spectrum JJ
We teamed up with Dollamur back in 2015 when we first started our academy! We use the FLEXI-Connect mats in tatami green! We are proud to use Dollamur mats! We grew up using puzzle mats and mats with large seams and we knew those options wouldn't work for us. Dollamur’s rollout mats were the perfect solution!
Working with the representative from Dollamur was quick and easy. Taking a gamble like starting a business is scary and the last thing we needed was the stress of figuring out our mat situation. We were able to pick our color and mat options and the rest was tailored to our space. We even had our logo put onto our mat and it still looks great almost 6 years later!
COVID-19 and Spectrum JJ
Unfortunately, in March of 2020 we had to shut down physical operations at our business due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, as soon as we closed down we jumped at the opportunity to offer virtual classes for our students! We spared no expense to provide the best possible virtual experience for our students and offered 100's of hours of virtual instruction and online curriculum.
We are now fully reopened and have seen many of our students return. West Virginia has led the way in vaccine roll out, which we are extremely thankful for! We can't wait to continue to grow with our community!
Future Goals at Spectrum
Moving into the future, we hope to get back on track with our goal of building our own building to house our continually growing community. With this, we will be able to offer more class options and cater to as many individuals as possible! We are proud to be the areas premiere Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy and can't wait to see what the future holds for us moving forward!
