Choosing Flooring for a Physical Therapy Clinic where the Floor is Part of the Treatment

Choosing Flooring for a Physical Therapy Clinic where the Floor is Part of the Treatment

Gait training, plyometric progressions, sled work, floor-based manual therapy — a physical therapy clinic asks more of its floor than most gyms do. Here is how to spec one surface at a time.

The Right Flooring for Every Part of the Clinic

A physical therapy clinic is a strange building to floor. In a single 2,000 square foot room you may have a patient relearning to walk, another loading a repaired ACL through change-of-direction drills, a third on the ground doing thoracic mobility work, and a rack of dumbbells that somebody is eventually going to drop.

Those are four different demands, and no single surface serves all of them well. A floor soft enough to protect a knee on landing is too soft to balance on. A floor hard enough to push a sled across is punishing for floor work. The clinics that get this right stop asking "what flooring should we buy" and start asking "what happens in each part of this room."

Dollamur has been manufacturing sport surfaces in Fort Worth, Texas for thirty years, and we build all four of the surfaces below. Here is how we would help you zone a clinic.

  • Cushioned mat — vinyl or carpet bonded foam: For floor-based treatment, mobility, mat-table adjacent work, plyometric landings.
  • Rubber — FIT-TECH™ rolls or tiles: Strength equipment, free weights, standing balance work, high-traffic walkways.
  • Turf Lane — Multi-Use Turf: Gait training, sled push and pull, agility ladders, return-to-sport progressions.

Cushioned Flooring that Gives The Right Support

The hardest thing to get right in a rehab space is the cushioning curve. Too firm and every landing goes straight into the joint you are trying to protect. Too soft and the surface becomes its own hazard — an ankle that sinks on contact is an ankle that can roll, and a patient with a balance deficit cannot find the floor under them.

What you want is a surface that absorbs the peak of an impact and then supports. Dollamur builds two:

Vinyl sports mats over a closed-cell, cross-linked athletic foam core. The foam meets ASTM F1081 / F355 standards, and the vinyl surface is non-porous with an EPA-registered biocidal additive infused during production — built into the material rather than coated on top, so it does not wear off in the traffic lanes. Available in a smooth finish or a low-profile Hybrid Tatami texture that adds grip without adding mat burn. Backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

Carpet bonded foam for clinics that want a warmer surface underfoot. A 26 oz. athletic carpet bonded to foam, in nine colors, meeting fire and impact safety standards, with a 3-year limited warranty. It is the surface many sports performance and bootcamp facilities use, and it works well for stretching, mobility and floor-based treatment areas.

Our expert-selected foam flooring is designed to support a wide range of rehabilitation activities, from controlled balance and strengthening exercises to landing progressions and higher-impact movement. It combines impact absorption with the stability and cleanability needed in a busy clinical environment.

  • Helps reduce impact on joints during landing drills, drop progressions, and other higher-impact rehabilitation exercises.
  • Provides a stable, supportive surface for balance training, single-leg exercises, gait work, and functional movement.
  • Supports versatile treatment spaces by accommodating both floor-based therapeutic exercises and more dynamic strength and conditioning work

Rubber that Does Not Bring The Air Quality Down with It

In a clinic that is not a minor annoyance. Your patients are breathing hard, some of them are cardiopulmonary cases, and many of them are in the building for an hour at a time, several times a week.

Our FIT-TECH™ rubber flooring is Clean Air Gold Certified and has passed rigorous VOC emissions testing — manufactured to meet strict standards for low chemical emissions rather than simply claiming to be low-odor.

Performance-wise it is a workhorse: rolls in 48" widths for seamless open areas, or interlocking and mat tiles at 24" x 24" and 47" x 47" when you want a zoned installation you can replace piece by piece. Thicknesses start at 1/4" and go up from there depending on what you are dropping on it. Color options run from solid black through flecked blends at 10%, 20%, 30% and 95% color density — enough range to line up with a clinic's brand palette rather than defaulting to gym black.

A Padded Turf Lane for Your Therapy Program

Turf has quietly become standard in physical therapy. Dollamur's Multi-Use Turf is built on a cross-linked polyethylene foam backing and can be infused with FLEXI-Roll® system as our mats, so it rolls out, rolls up and repositions — useful in a clinic that reconfigures for classes, group sessions or an evening sports program.

You can also add customization suzh as: inlaid lines, hash marks, agility ladders and logos, using inlaid color technology instead of paint. That distinction matters more in a clinic than a gym — painted markings flake, and a flaking distance marker on a gait training lane is a measurement you can no longer trust.

Send us the floor plan. We will zone it and price it.
