Bush Jitsu Sticks with Dollamur
Another beautiful set of mats we’ve recently been following out of Dollamur are the mats that have been created for Bush Jitsu! We got in touch and were lucky enough to speak with Charlie “slim” Kim - a student / competitor at Bush Jitsu that was eager to tell us about their gym, their team and how much they’re loving their Dollamur products.
Bush Jitsu is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym founded by Brennan Matheson in March 2019, affiliated with Gracie Gym New Zealand. Bush Jitsu started small - literally in a tiny shed - in a tiny city called Whangarei, which is located at the top of the North Island in New Zealand. Here at Bush Jitsu, we have classes for kids, youth and adults at all skill levels from brand new white belts to seasoned competitors alike.

Here at Bush Jitsu we are very open and welcoming to all, the only requirement to come train at Bush Jitsu is to have a love for Jiu-Jitsu and a positive attitude. Jiu-Jitsu inherently is a solo sport but here at Bush, it is a team sport as we all contribute to each other's success and progress, and celebrate each other's successes like our own. One of the main reasons for Bush Jitsu's success, apart from all the members, is our head coach, Brennan Matheson, who started this gym with nothing and built it up to be the 8th ranked gym in New Zealand in the 20/21 competition season. Members at Bush have this motto of some sort – we like to say “we take our training very seriously but we don't take ourselves too seriously.” This approach helps create a nice, friendly environment but also some killer Jiu-Jitsu at the same time.
Bush Jitsu & Dollamur
We got the Dollamur FLEXI-Connect mats customized with our Bush Jitsu logo on them in October last year. We previously used puzzle tatami mats which in comparison to our new Dollamur mats are day and night. Much higher quality and the rollout feature makes it a lot more portable and convenient. The Dollamur mats weren't just mats for us here at Bush Jitsu - they represented a new beginning and the growth for our gym.
Working with Dollamur to create our Bush Jitsu customized mats was nice and easy. Creating mats not only to train on but also to be able to host competitions with was a great feature. By having 4 outlined squares with a Bush logo in the middle of each we are able to have competitions on them.
Bush Jitsu vs Covid-19
Bush Jitsu, unfortunately, had to shut down multiple times during the COVID lockdown periods in New Zealand and it was rough on all of us but now we are glad to be back training doing the thing we love.
Our aim is to continue to welcome more members to Bush Jitsu with the same friendly environment, continue leveling up our Jiu-Jitsu, and have more awesome competition seasons.
